Through this writing, I realised that I can't remember W.B from my own experience because I never knew him. But sitting in the bench reading his name, and imagining his relationship with this place, I became aware of someone who was there before me. So maybe the bench doesn't make me remember him directly, but it creates an opportunity to think about and acknowledge him.
I chose a bench in wimbledon common as my site and visited on the 24th September. My first method was photographing. I photographed the bench and its surroundings, focusing on small details I noticed while sitting and observing. I also collected litter found around the bench.
My third method was sound recording. I recorded the sounds around the bench to explore whether someone could identify the location through sound alone. I captured a variety of sounds, including wind, passing cars, people talking and birds singing. These overlapping sounds revealed different aspects of the surrounding environment.
I noticed that many different sounds overlapped, including wind, traffic, conversations and birds. I realised that although these sounds gave clues about the environment, it was difficult to identify the exact location through sound alone. This made me think about how we experience a place differently when we cannot see it.
